Fringe Arts Bath 2008 programme
Fringe Arts Bath (FAB)
Friday 23rd May - Sunday 8th June 2008, Bath city centre
This year FAB is very excited to present over 100 up-and-coming artists and curators. Our headline group show this year (curated by Daphne Wright) is Locus; a theme which has inspired our entire festival. There are 8 exhibitions and many more art events and happenings planned. Why not celebrate with us on our opening night, Friday 23rd May, from 6pm, at the exhibition venues.
We have a great kid's programme this year with three events ranging from three to 16 year olds; The Orange Juice Arts Trail, The Human Animal mask making workshop and The Great FAB Arts Debate. We will be running FAB guided tours on Saturday 7th June, with a special guest tour guide, for the grown-ups.
The FAB Art Fair is on Sunday 1st June this year, where you can buy work direct from over 40 local up-and-coming contemporary artists. This year FAB is teaming-up with Bath Fringe's Bedlam street fair. There will be a relaxed Sunday vibe, with bars, a music stage, street performers and buskers. The roads will be closed throughout the event, so it's great for the kids too!
For more details please go to www.fringeartsbath.co.uk
ABOUT FAB
Fringe Arts Bath is a not-for-profit, artist-led initiative, which aims to make contemporary art visible and accessible to everyone in Bath.
FAB is the cheeky little sister of the Bath Fringe. Running from 23rd May - 8th June this year, the festival theme is 'Location' and will breathe new life into our beautiful heritage city by showcasing the talented up-and-coming artists and curators of today.
Why is it important? Bath's reputation for its heritage past is something that we can all be proud of, but at FAB we also passionately believe in nurturing a reputation for culture and the arts for the future.
Settlement
Settlement: a drawing out from place
Technically, more installation than drawing. Essentially, more experiment than exhibition.
Emergent artist Emma Moxey invites you to interpret and inhabit an evolving translated place, where drawings re-present, respond and correspond, to bridge synaesthetic dimensions of time and space.
Exhibited works will be accompanied by four interpretative soundscape projects, representing the validity of the viewers' response. Sound artists: Niki Hares; Nathan Alecsander-Gray; Jordan Caraway; Nick Sharpe.

Bath Artists Printmakers, (BAP'S) Members exhibition
'Bath Artist Printmakers was founded almost twenty five years ago. The workshop, now based in Larkhall, provides excellent printing facilities for line and aquatint etching, relief printing, monotype, some screen printing and even bookbinding. There is a thriving membership of experienced and relatively new printmakers who provide each other with both technical advice and inspiration and members run classes at the workshop from time to time.
In this exhibition you will find abstract and figurative prints using a wide variety of technique
Lara Varga 'The Hummingbird is a Great Warrior'
'Everyone is born belonging to a circle.
There is no power until you have completed your circle.'
Agnes Whistling Elk, Amerindian Elder.
A series of digital prints and etchings centered on the hummingbird.
The hummingbird appears in many Amerindian stories and myths and is a powerful symbol of healing, transformation and also romantic love.
One of the widespread beliefs is that hummingbirds are messengers and they help medicine people keep nature and spirit in balance.

EXHIBITIONS
ICIAs three exhibitions reveal a strong sense of place. International artist Polly Gould, commemorated the third anniversary of her fathers death with a journey to one of the most remote and uninhabitable places on earth, the Antarctic Peninsular. The resulting exhibition, Peninsular, uses video, photography and drawing to explore mourning, melancholia and the idea of the artists lonely journey into sublime nature (1 March to 20 June). Tim Brennans exhibition Great Northern Coalfield is an atmospheric series of photographic seascape exploring how geography, personal memory and social history intersect (19 April - 1 Aug). The images have been created using equipment available to all of us - the low-resolution mobile phone camera. Tim enlarges the images beyond clear definition until they are hazy and impressionistic. Tim Brennan is regarded as one of the most important practitioners to contribute to the social and political role of contemporary art.
In Charged Atmospheres Alison Marchant presents a series of photographs of grand interiors and stately homes in decay. Dating from the 1970s, these photographs belonged to the public agency for historic monuments before being discarded. Alison is fascinated by these photographs as they offer a range of interpretations, implying a tension between Britains self-promotion through its aristocratic heritage, and the reality of homelessness. Alison has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally (Sat 5 July - Fri 31 Oct).
ICIA holds an afternoon seminar entitled Summoning the Past (Sat 5 July) at the University of Bath to explore the themes of spatialisation, documentation and historical moment. Speakers include Professor Jane Rendell, The Bartlett, UCL and Alison Marchant, artist.

1st RWA Open Photography Exhibition
8 June 20 July
The summer will see an exciting new venture filling the elegant galleries of the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. For the first time in its 150-year history, photographs will dominate the space. More than 300 items selected from open submission of over 2500 images will be displayed alongside a group of works by five invited artists: Richard Long RA RWA, Keith Arnatt, Richard Billingham, Chang-soo Kim from Seoul, South Korea and Philippa Lawrence. Another special feature will be a display of platinum prints from 31 Studio, Stroud.
Although international in scope, the response from the photographers of Bristol to this open exhibition has been outstanding. Over 260 artists from the local region submitted more than 1300 photographs showing that Bristol really is a city of burgeoning creativity.
The work on display will be wide-ranging; some controversial and provocative and others more traditionally beautiful and serene. There will truly be something for everyone and with the large majority of work for sale this exhibition is the perfect opportunity to buy that special piece of contemporary art.
All exhibitors within the open selection will have the chance to win one of the sponsored prizes. Prize sponsors include Flowers East Gallery, Printmaking Today, Gallery2C in Bristol, The Darkroom UK Ltd, London Camera Exchange, Spike Print Studio, John Purcell Paper, Friends of the RWA and a £1000 purchase prize from the RWA. Visitors will also have the opportunity to win a free photography course in the Cotswolds sponsored by Andalucian Adventures.

Onya McCausland - residency at Gloucester Cathedral
Onya McCausland is showing new work made during her one year residency
at Gloucester Cathedral. The opening is on Saturday 10th May 6.30-8.30pm at
the Cathedral.
Anya Lewin: With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment
With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment developed from an inherited and unexplained collection of autographed photographs of 1920's film and theatre stars that frequented the Berlin dental practice of Anya Lewin's grandfather, Dr Ignatz Lewin. A Jewish Polish family, they fled to the USA in 1938, soon after Krystallnacht and just before Hitler invaded Poland.
With Heartfelt Gratitude for the Painless Treatment is a blend of the historical with the imaginative and theatrical. The story is full of holes, the evidence a group of glamorous photographs, a set of crystal dishes engraved with a Jewish star and a few mythical tales passed down through generations. This work does not try to sew together the pieces to tell a complete story, but to understand history as fragmentary and as a place for the imagination. The film travels throught the Wiener Library archive to discover the original Berlin address of the dental office to reveal a film within a film - a re-imagining, shot with a nod to silent German Cinema, of the dental practice and its fascinating patients.
What respite from the growing political mayhem did the internal space of the dental office offer? Imagined scenes of slapstick dental exams, illustrious parties, flirtations and sad partings are augmented by the aural and textual elements of the work which acknowledge the growth of Nazi power during the period. The obvious constructed set of both the film and the installation underline the fictional nature of the work while the archival material plays against this questioning.

'The Edge of Tranquillity' - a show of paintings in Bath 23rd May - 4th June 2008
Chapel Row Gallery
Vibrant colour, simplified forms, and a strong sense of perspective are key elements that define Nick Gerolemou's distinctive style as a landscape painter. Best known for his acrylic paintings depicting scenes along the Bristol to Bath cycle path, to date he has enjoyed a number of group shows in and around Bristol where his work has been well received amongst the local art buying community.
Taking a step forward in 2008, Nick is embarking on his first solo show 'The Edge of Tranquillity' at the prestigious Chapel Row Gallery in Bath. As well work based on the nearby cycle path, Nick's paintings take us to locations further afield; from the flat, open and desolate expanses of Dungeness on the Kent coast to the rolling hills and winding roads of Lippiano, on the Tuscan - Umbrian border in Italy. These three locations contrast greatly Nick explains, but what firmly ties them together is that they all offer a place of 'escape' away from the humdrum of everyday life; a tranquil place to unwind, slow down, relax and obtain a different perspective.
At a deeper level, what interests Nick most is the transient nature of the 'getaway' experience, be it relating to the sense of anticipation when approaching a new destination, or the awareness that the end of a relaxing holiday awaits. These thoughts are conveyed by the reoccurring motif of paths and roads evident in much of Nick's work, which also help to portray a sense of travelling through the landscape without ever truly being able to stop. As the title of the show suggests, 'The Edge of Tranquillity' is about being on the edge of something wonderful, peaceful; being part of a place for a limited period of time but never fully embracing it or getting to know it on a permanent basis.
Nick often takes inspiration from the combination of a strong perspective viewpoint, dramatic light source and the contrasting textures of both man-made and natural forms in the landscapes; the harmonies between organised geometric shapes and the haphazard elements of nature. Often just the hint of a structure within the landscape is enough to add a focal point or help lead the eye through a painting. The strong lines of perspective disappearing into the distance from the redundant station platforms at Mangotsfield or the abandoned fishing boats on the shingle banks of Dungeness have been recurrent themes in my paintings as a result.
'The Edge of Tranquillity' opens at the Chapel Row Gallery in Bath on the 23rd May and runs for two weeks until 4th June. Preview evening Friday 23rd May 7-9.30pm.

Cloth Road Arts Week
03 May to 11 May 2008
Cloth Road Artists are to stage the third Cloth Road Arts Week and this one promises to be the best to date. The week runs from Saturday 3rd May until Sunday 11th May taking in the early May bank holiday weekend. Taking the form of an art trail, the nine day week will open a window on the tremendous diversity and range of visual creativity in West Wiltshire and will showcase some 72 artists and makers at 32 different venues, many in their own studios.
Work displayed will include paintings, sculpture, jewellery, textiles, woodcarving, glassmaking and photography.
Members of the public are invited to meet and talk with individual artists at each of the venues on the trail and will have the chance to buy or commission work directly from them if they wish.
The Cloth Road, echoing the once thriving cloth weaving trade that the area was built on, extends through Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon, Melksham and the surrounding villages and provides a very pleasant
backdrop for visiting art lovers and those with perhaps a more passing interest. All the artists involved will be pleased to welcome your visit.
The last event saw nearly 6,000 visitors viewing art across the 29 venues. Artists in the area welcomed the opportunity of being able to open up their work to the public. Visitors enjoyed viewing the work and finding out more about the lives of practising artists in the locality. The trail can be followed using a map provided in the brochure, and as the total of distance of the trail is very manageable, visitors can have fun exploring the whole trail taking in the towns and countryside as they follow the route.
The free Cloth Road Arts Week brochure guide will be available to pick up from local libraries, tourist information centres and various shops and outlets throughout Wiltshire.

Audiences South West launched
South West Audience Development Agency Announce New Identity
The audience development agency for the South West region have launched our new identity as Audiences South West (new contact details below). This marks a a significant moment in the development of the agency, formerly known as South West Arts Marketing.
We announced the new identity at the agency's On Your Marks Symposium on the Cultural Olympiad on Friday 18 April 2008, to cultural organisations, regional arts agencies and policy decision makers from across the South West. Audiences South West will be working with cultural organisations to help them fulfil their business potential through growing audiences and building participation. On the agency's new identity, Audiences South West Director, Jo Dereza, announced that:
'the move reflects a critical shift in our way of working. At the centre of what we do is a desire to increase participation in culture by developing the use of market intelligence and audience focused thinking as a fundamental business planning tool, supporting organisational development and helping increase sustainability.'
This new direction for the agency, which was established in 2000, will allow for greater flexibility in the way in which we work with partners and cultural organisations. Nick Capaldi, Executive Director at Arts Council England South West commented:
''Audiences South West's new identity reflects their broader remit. The Arts Council's mission is to get more people in the South West involved as artists, audiences and participants in high quality creative activity. Audiences South West's new name encapsulates this statement of intent and we are delighted, through our investment in the organisation, to be helping them with their next phase of development.'
The agency will look to build on our strategic role regionally and sub-regionally in bringing audience development to the fore at all levels of cultural decision-making, whilst continuing to provide bespoke services for cultural organisations. Services range from audience research to support in implementing audience development initiatives. Audiences South West will continue to provide the popular advice surgeries and training courses and will be working with national bodies to enhance the skills development programme. In addition, Audiences South West will redesign the agency's website over the next six months to make it easier to navigate, with increased interactivity and enhanced resources.

On View - regeneration arts project, Dursley
What is 'On View'?
'On View' is an arts project that aims to assist in the regeneration of Dursley town centre by providing a positive use for vacant shops until they are let.
This initiative will raise the profile of Dursley and its local Artists.
Why is this important?
Over the last few years Dursley has experienced a period of decline caused by the closure of several large employers. The town centre has begun to look shabby and rundown. We need to restore the confidence of local residents and potential investors, with a number of positive initiatives that create interest and civic pride.
This project is an important piece in the regeneration jigsaw and we hope you will give it your support.
Empty shops need to be viewed positively, for the opportunities they offer.
How does it work?
We will exhibit quality local Artists work for six weeks at a time in the renovated, well presented vacant shop windows.
This project will run for twelve months with a view to reviewing and extending the life of the project.
What will this entail ?
o Owners will have the opportunity for their shop fronts to be cleaned and fresly painted free of charge. This is to improve the appearance of the shop and to present the Artwork professionally.
o The shop window will be cleaned every 2 months by a local window cleaner at no cost to the owner.
o There will be a selection panel to select artwork to be shown.
o Each exhibition will change every six weeks.
o The inclusion of artists will be from the locality
o There will be regular press releases by the coordinator/town centre manager on the project focusing on the Artists.
How will the shops be used ?
There will be one key holder, the project coordinator, with a deputy to cover sickness/holidays
Only the areas directly behind the shop windows will be used.
The premises will be vacated within a maximum of one week on receipt of instruction from the landlord or their agent.
The artists work will not be priced for sale ( otherwise we have to pay business rates on all shops) however, information on the Artists will be available by contacting the coordinator by email or phone and from designated sites in the town.
How does this work for the Artists ?
Images of Artists work will go to before a panel for selection .
Artists expressing interest in exhibiting are via email to ; on_view@btinternet.com with 3-5 j pegs of the type of work that they wish to have considered.
The artist and project coordinator will install the artist's work together.
Each Artist will be exhibited for six weeks.
The Artist will be responsible for insuring his or her own work and Artists will sign a disclaimer so that there is no financial risk on either the landlord or the coordinator.
Funding.
This regeneration project is jointly funded by Stroud District Council and Dursley Town Council.

Drugs and Homeless Initiative seeks artists
Calling all Artists!
I am writing from The Drugs and Homeless Initiative, an agency based in Bath supporting people who have or have had problems with alcohol and drug misuse, or who have experienced homelessness.
One of the services we offer at present is a very sucessful Art Group that runs on Monday from 10am to 2pm. I was wondering if there were any artists who would be willing to come in and share their skills with our clients. At present there are about half a dozen clients all very motivated and willing to learn new skills. They have mostly been experimenting with acrylics but i would be keen to bring in some other mediums, especially clay.
This is not an art therapy group, more a space that allows people to experiment and try new things, and find new ways to express their creativity.
I am hoping also to arrange for an exhibition to take place in the near future for members of the group to show their work.
If anyone is interested in coming and sharing their ideas or skills i would be very happy to hear from you. I can be contacted on 01225 329411 most days.

Artists retreat in Turkey
For art lovers and artists. IAM is a foundation which provides excellent working conditions for artists along with board and lodging. The complex comprises two buildings. There are four large studios in one building and 24 bedrooms in the other. Outside there is a beautiful garden, an amphitheatre and a large terrace with a swimming pool. The centre is used for the most part by artists. The facilities provide an opportunity for people to hold their workshops in a beautiful setting and Turkish artists meet here in their summer holidays. There is also a programme for guest artists who are chosen by the foundations advisory committee on art. But working sessions set up by other organizations are also possible. Other guests are, of course, always welcome too.
We would be pleased if we could get in touch with artists through art associations and let them know about our existence and about the working conditions available here in what is really a beautiful setting combining nature, sun and sea. A charge for using studios is only levied for workshops. IAM is situated in one of the most attractive coastal areas in Turkey, in the south-western part of the country in the small holiday resort of Turunç on the edge of a pine forest with a spectacular view over the bay.
We would be very grateful if you could pass this information on to your members. IAM is not a commercial enterprise. It is, as I said above, a foundation and hence a non-profit organisation. IAM does not organize courses itself. It provides a place for artists to come and stay.
Please visit our website at www.akademionline.net
Should you need any further information, I will be pleased to be of assistance.
