What is BANA? (Bath Area Network for Artists)

BANA is an artist-led network that is trying to raise the profile of arts activity in the Bath area with the aim of establishing and strengthening links between artists, artists' groups and art promoters, and of advocating for increased investment in local arts activities. BANA was established in 1998 by artists, for artists, and works through artists to achieve these aims. It is a non-selective network and its membership is made up of artists committed to professional practice.

Chosen as priorities for the network at its inception, BANA's core activities and services are a website and artists' database, a newsletter and artists' cafes where members can meet, share information and network. BANA's intention is to develop services that help Artists and Designer-makers sustain their practice in the long-term - services such as: access to advice; training and expertise; researching issues such as studio provision and exhibition opportunities in the area.

BANA relies on its members coming forward with projects and ideas, as well as supporting and developing projects, in partnership with others, that provide opportunities for its members.

BANA's main strength is its membership. BANA relies on the interest and active involvement of its individual member artists to keep it alive and well, and its rate of expansion in recent years indicates the underlying demand for the network.

BANA's voluntary Committee is formally constituted to manage the day to day running of the network. The Committee welcomes and encourages anyone who is interested in helping with the day to day running of the network to come along and get involved.

The three-year plan 2005 – 2008

In early 2005 BANA received confirmation of a three-year grant of diminishing funds from Arts Council England, South West, and also of continuing financial support from B&NES Council. These two sources are enabling a period of consolidation, following BANA’s organisational development project Into The Light (2003 – 2004). During this time BANA is continuing to enhance its services to members through a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme, and new series of talks and events, including a Contemporary Art Talks in partnership with Media Art Bath; more details can be found on the Projects and Events pages of this site.

Over the period 2005 – 2008 BANA is aiming to increase its links with local businesses, to help the network move towards self-sustainability.
